Wine Tasting in Ireland: Kelly’s Resort Hotel & Spa Wexford – From Fine Wine to Fine Art
Unwinding in Coastal Luxury: Wine Tasting in Ireland at Kelly’s Resort & Spa Hotel Wexford
Nestled along the picturesque Rosslare coastline of Wexford, in Ireland’s ‘sunny southeast’, Kelly’s Resort and Spa Hotel stands as a both a testament to generations of hospitality and excellence, and a beacon of relaxation and rejuvenation.
Patrick our Bevvy of the Week writer, and I have had the pleasure of immersing ourselves in the timeless charm and modern comforts offered by this renowned establishment on two occasions; once in March 2020, a week before COVID-19 hit the country and world with lockdown. And the second time in March 2024 – both visits were for Kelly’s ‘Wine Tasting Experience‘ as part of their ‘Spring Special Activities: Midweek.‘
And despite the multitude of changes that have unfolded over the past four years, ranging from renovations and upgrades to new builds, I’m delighted to share that the most important elements have remained constant and consistent. And among these enduring qualities are the exceptional customer service, the inviting and hospitable ambiance, and the genuine dedication to crafting experiences that guests will cherish and wish to revisit again and again.
Embracing its heritage spanning five generations, Kelly’s Resort and Spa Hotel epitomises the essence of coastal elegance. Situated along five miles of pristine sandy beach, the resort exudes an easy atmosphere that offers the opportunity to unwind and bask in the beauty of both the hotels interiors and its natural surroundings.
The legacy of Kelly’s is not merely in its history but in its commitment to excellence, evident in every aspect of their guest experience.

Fine Wine Tasting in Ireland: Kelly’s Resort & Spa Hotel Wexford
Each year Kelly’s Resort & Spa Hotel offers guests the opportunity to enjoy a plethora of specially curated activities during their spring and autumn seasons. Of course you can enjoy an abundance of activities anytime outside of these curated specials, during their opening seasons of spring, summer and autumn too.
However if you’ve ever been keen to up your skills then I highly recommend you keep an eye on their ‘Special Activities Midweek‘ which range from wine tasting to art appreciation, and cooking to gardening. All hosted by experts in their fields from celebrity chefs to renowned wine prodigies. Here’s an example of my wine tasting experiences and the knowledge I garnered:
Wine Tasting with Benjamin Leroux
Back in 2020 I had the pleasure of joining Benjamin Leroux, who is hailed as one of the most gifted and knowledgeable wine growers in the esteemed Côte d’Or region. A child genius, Leroux began his journey by studying at the prestigious Lycée Viticole in Beaune at just thirteen years old, before assuming leadership at Domaine Comte Armand when he was a mere twenty-six.
Nowadays Leroux boasts his own range of wines spanning from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin, a testament to his widespread acclaim and respect within the industry. Despite his access to famed terroirs, Leroux remains steadfast in his commitment to only working with vineyards that exhibit exceptional management and produce outstanding fruit, prioritizing quality over notoriety.
During the tasting experience we tried and enjoyed:
Volnay ‘Clos de la Cave des Ducs’ – 1er Cru – 2017, 2016, 2014, 2012, 2010 and 2008.

Domaine Marchand Tawse Tasting
This year, 2024, we were treated to an exclusive midweek wine tasting experience featuring renowned winery ‘Domaine Marchand-Tawse’. On hand to guide us through our experience was Pascal Marchand, a French-Canadian prodige who, at just 22 years old, assumed leadership of Clos des Epeneaux in Pommard in 1985, swiftly garnering acclaim and reshaping modern Burgundy.
Together with a new wave of Burgundy producers, Pascal elevated Clos des Epeneaux and embraced organic practices. Seeking new ventures, he partnered with Jean-Charles Boisset to establish Domaine de la Vougeraie in 1999, pioneering organic and biodynamic methods in Burgundy winemaking. After departing in 2006, Pascal laid the groundwork for his own micro-negotiant venture at Domaine Jean Fery.
In 2011, Pascal joined forces with fellow French-Canadian Moray Tawse of Tawse Winery to create Maison Marchand-Tawse, a revered modern negotiant house – blending insider connections with external support. Pascal’s enduring influence is palpable in their distinguished wine portfolio, a testament to his stature in the industry.
During the wine tasting experience we tried and enjoyed:
Coteau Bourguignons, Gamay, 2020 | Bourgogne 47N, Pinot Noir, 2018 | Cote de Nuits, Village, 2019 | Gevrey-Chambertin 2019 | Vosne-Romanée 2019 | Nuits-Saint-George ‘Les Corvées Pagnet’ 1er Cru, 2019.
Fine Wining and Dining at Kelly’s Resort Hotel & Spa
One of the best things about wine tasting at Kelly’s Resort is the opportunity to put your new found wine knowledge to the test by ordering a bottle of your favourite (from your tasting experience, if you so wish) and complementing it with a fine meal. And where better to experience this than in an award-winning restaurant, and as luck has it Kelly’s Resort isn’t home to just one award-winning restaurant, but two multi-award winners; Kelly’s main restaurant ‘Beaches Restaurant’ run by Executive Chef Eugene Callaghan, and their newest addition ‘The Sea Rooms’, lead by ‘Young Chef of the Year’ winner; Chris Fullam.
Beaches Restaurant
Winners of a collection of prestigious awards from regional to all-Ireland, Beaches Restaurant is a testament to the resort’s commitment to culinary excellence. During our stays we savoured a diverse array of flavours paired with wines from an extensive and meticulously curated wine list.

Dining at Beaches Restaurant is an experience that engages all the senses. Whether indulging in fresh seafood or savouring seasonal specialties, the restaurant itself is a feast for the eyes with its opulent chandeliers and magnificent collection of art.
Did you know? The wonderful art, (from Howard Hodgkin and David Hitchens to Picasso and Andy Warhol) that adorns the walls of Kelly’s Resort has been built upon, and curated, for over 40 years! And if you are interested you can take a self-guided tour of the artworks during your visit. Or you can go one step further and purchase Bill Kelly’s book, published in 2010; ‘For the love of Art, The Kelly Collection’ in honour of the art you witness, and his parents William and Breda Kelly.

Kelly’s Kitchen Gardens: A Culinary Haven
One of the standout features of Kelly’s Resort and Spa is undoubtedly Kelly’s Kitchen Gardens. Led by talented head gardener, Deirdre Howlin, the gardens are the perfect example of “Field to Fork” production.
Outside of dining, guests are invited to wander around and through the gardens, to witness firsthand the journey of the fresh vegetables and herbs used by both restaurants at Kelly’s Resort.
Along with the sustainability aspects of growing their own food, Kelly’s Kitchen Gardens also encourages a deeper appreciation for the culinary artistry showcased at their restaurants, with the pièce de résistance always being the produces’ last adventure, and that of course is the delicious dining experience on offer – from soil to plate!
The Sea Rooms
As the sun sets over the horizon, guests are invited to embark on a culinary journey at The Sea Rooms.
Designed by LUCA Architects, this modern, sculpture-like building is the perfect example of innovation and elegance. With its glass structure, sea views, and custom barbecue kitchen installed by Smokin’ Soul, dining at The Sea Rooms is an experience to savour, and we aren’t the only ones who think so, as the restaurant has already racked up a number of best restaurant accolades since it opened its doors in 2023.
The Ivy Room
The Reimagined Ivy Room: A Coastal Oasis
The newly refurbished Ivy Room is a wonderfully light and engaging space, designed by the aforementioned LUCA Architecture. It exudes coastal charm with its blend of contemporary and mid-century styles.
Offering breathtaking views of the sea and gardens, the Ivy Room serves as the heart of the hotel, inviting guests to unwind in style and comfort whether for Afternoon Tea, or a ‘nightcap’ before bed.
