How To Have Your Wedding Cake And Eat It
Top Wedding Tips for When You Can’t Agree on Your Wedding Plan
When you and your partner decide to marry, you do so because you’ve finally found the love you’ve been searching for. Yet, despite the way they make it look in the movies, love is not a case of agreeing all the time. Rather, it’s about finding enough equal footing to fit together regardless. But, what happens when you realise that you both have very different wedding plans for how your ‘big day’ should be?
Search this on Google, and you’ll pull up countless articles that tell you to compromise, compromise, and compromise a little more. The trouble is that, where the dreaded c-word is concerned, one of you is guaranteed to end up with a day that’s not the wedding you would’ve truly loved. Believe us when we say that this kind of thing sticks, and no one wants to enter a marriage with resentment already bubbling under the surface.
So, contrary to popular advice, that leaves compromise largely off the table. The question is, how can you have your wedding cake and eat it without breaking your engagement altogether? Here are our ‘Top Wedding Tips for When You Can’t Agree on Your Wedding Plan’:
1. Be Clear On Each Other’s Non-Negotiables
First, sit down to talk about the things that you’re each 100% not willing to move on. It might be that your partner’s previously pushed for a change of location but, when he thinks it through, he admits he doesn’t really mind about the venue as long as he doesn’t have to compromise on your guest list. Equally, you might notice that decor doesn’t matter as much as you thought, but you’re definitely not willing to budge on the venue. With a bit of luck, taking things one piece at a time like this will help you to work together to build a wedding jigsaw that fits and makes room for both of your most pressing desires.
2. Find Ways To Make Space For Both Of You
Next, put plans in place for those instances where your non-negotiables clashed. For instance, if he can’t let go of a countryside venue but you want a city wedding, you could simply search around for venues with lovely grounds but in a city location. Or, if you want to go all out with no expenses spared but he wants to keep things modest, you could look for tips to keep your wedding on budget while still achieving the luxury touches you crave. We aren’t going to lie, this won’t be easy, but nothing worth having ever was, and making space for each other like this definitely isn’t a bad way to start a marriage.
3. Don’t Be Afraid Of Different Events
If push comes to shove, then you might just have to plan different events. While this can seem like a stress, holding your ceremony and reception in different places can be a lot of fun, allowing you both free creative reign in different aspects of the day. That way, you can factor for everything from different settings, to different guests lists, and even different themes, proving just how much you’re willing to go above and beyond to make each other happy.
