Soothing Herbs #1 – Chamomile

Coming from the Asteraceae plant family, this daisy-like flower has been used in many ways for centuries. Due to its potency, chamomile is used as a natural remedy to treat many health conditions. While some people prefer to boil the flowers and infuse them in hot water as a tea, others opt for its essential extract from a rosin press.

Since historic times, the Greeks and Romans are known to be the highest users and drinkers of chamomile tea. To prove its efficacy, however, studies by Research Gate revealed that not only is the chamomile a relaxing plant, but it’s also significant in reducing anxiety. Moreover, due to its antioxidant compounds such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, this infused herb binds to brain neurons to reduce stress, resolve appetite loss, and calm headaches.

To prepare it, all you need to do is pour boiled water onto two teaspoons of dried chamomile. Let it stand for about three minutes, and you’re ready to drink your anxiety and stress away. You can add some honey to sweeten it.

Soothing Herbs #2 –  Cannabis Sativa

Although popular around the world, few people know this plant by its uncorrupted name, Cannabis Sativa. In actual fact, it’s simply another name for the marijuana plant. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the active ingredient in the Cannabis Sativa plant and Cannabis oil is the concentrated liquid extracted from it. CBD products have several beneficial uses and are widely presented in liquid body oils and topical creams.

Even though cannabis’ recreational use is illegal in the United Kingdom, CBD is legal only if it meets certain criteria. For example, for it to be sold and used legally in Ireland and the UK, it must not contain a value exceeding 0.2%THC. With this background information, you can safely purchase and use products such as Cannabull for personal use. You can even purchase CBD seeds from reputable seed shops like Zamnesia, and grow them at home. This can save you money in the long run and provide a more sustainable source of CBD. But again always check the legal status in your country of residence.

Soothing Herbs #3 – Lavender

The lavender plant is a common feature in aromatherapy, mostly due to its slightly sedating effects. For many centuries, it has been used as a natural remedy to induce calm while treating nervousness. It’s mostly common in oil form and contains compounds and phytochemicals which target cortisol (stress hormone).

Lavender oil can be derived from two different parts of the same plant, namely the flower and the flower spike. The lavender flower oil is insoluble in water, colourless, and has a density of 0.885 g/mL. The lavender spike oil on the other hand has a density of 0.905 g/mL.

Studies show that a few drops of lavender oil massaged into the body’s pulse points has great relaxation benefits. Another way to use it is to drop about 4 drops into 3 cups of hot water and inhale the steam.

The next time you want to deal with stress and anxiety the natural way, hopefully, you’ll consider some or all of these calming herbs. However, there are many more, but ensure to seek good medical advice before consuming any of these if you’re on medication.
