When the opportunity arose last month to stay at the luxurious townhouse hotel ‘Stauntons on the Green‘ it felt like a phoenix rising from the ashes. The phoenix being ‘restrictions eased’ and the ashes; the ‘COVID-19 lockdown’.

The stay was a night away for just the two of us. And parental guilt was left at the door, as our two little boys safely enjoyed their own night away with their first sleepover in six months. We packed a small suitcase, with ‘going out’ clothes as dinner in a restaurant was also planned. And along with our face masks and hand sanitisers, we made our way to Stephens Green in Dublin City Centre.

Stauntons on the Green is a Georgian Gem

Looking out over Stephens Green Park, with its own courtyard and garden along with a private entrance to the tranquil Iveagh Gardens, there’s nowhere else like it. And as we eased back into a ‘new normal’ for how we enjoy our hotel stay experiences. I can honestly say that there’s nowhere else I would have preferred to allow us to do so.

From the moment we entered the hotel, to our farewells, our stay was thoroughly enjoyable. Yes there was a screen at reception and hand sanitising stations throughout the hotel. We did have to book our breakfast in advance, and were wary of keeping our distance. But these ‘changes’ felt like second nature, and they didn’t infringe on the beauty of the hotel, the service we received, and how much we enjoyed spending time relaxing in our room, sipping coffee in the garden or delighting in the delicious breakfast that was served to us the next morning.

Stauntons on the Green Assistant Manager, John and his team, provided an excellent service from check-in, to check-out, with coffee and breakfast in between. Our stay was one to remember, and we look forward to returning again.

Historical & Heartwarming

If walls could talk, the high-ceilinged ones at Stauntons on the Green would have plenty of stories to tell. With a history of over 250 years, the hotel has been home to a number of historical figures who have shaped the Ireland and its culture we witness today. From Henry Gratton to Gerard Manley Hopkins, it’s easy to see why the later chose the hotel as a base for writing his world famous sonnets.

And the best thing is that today you can witness unique old-worldly architectural and design charms throughout the hotel, because it has been restored with love and appreciation.

Harry Clarke Window

I adore the works of Dublin born Stained-Glass Artist and Illustrator Harry Clarke, and have done so for some time. So it was a pinch-me moment to come so close to one of his windows at Stauntons on the Green. ‘The Blessed Julie and Two Children’ is a stunning work of art, and a highlight of the artistic treasures to be found adorning the hotel.

Our Stunning Room

The quality of restoration and attention to interior design detail doesn’t stop when you enter your room. From the high ceilings, to the grand fireplace. The oversized shuttered windows that look out onto Stephens Green, let it in plenty of natural light and once closed one would be forgiven for forgetting one was sleeping in the heart of Dublin City – it was so quiet.

Our ‘Superior Double’ room with luxurious bed linen, chandeliers in both the bedroom and ensuite, flat screen TV, and power shower, stayed true to the hotel’s luxury feel. Indeed it might be a historic hotel, but its facilities are anything but, and the mod-cons we enjoy both at home and away were there to be enjoyed with ease.

The Courtyard & Garden

The courtyard and gardens of Stauntons on the Green are an oasis in the city. Nestled behind and surrounded by the hotel building, this beautifully landscaped area is a treat to enjoy. Take a seat in the courtyard, or on the manicured lawn. A sun trap in the afternoon, and romantically lit by chandeliers hanging from its ancient trees at night.

And if that wasn’t enjoy, the gardens have their own private entrance to the gorgeously tranquil Iveagh Gardens – an often forgotten Dublin garden gem in its own right.

Breakfast of Champions

After a sound sleep, and invigorating power shower the next test of a great night away is the breakfast the next morning. And we both relished at the standard of breakfast served to us. Freshly baked, and cooked, a fine selection to choose from. We sat enjoying every bite as we watched the world go by outside the breakfast room window.

Local Attractions a Stroll Away

Based in the heart of Georgian Dublin, Stauntons on the Green is only minutes away on foot to some of the best landmarks, museums, galleries, gardens, parks and shopping the city has to offer. Take in the nearby architecture keeping an eye out for plaques of knowledge along the way, witness buskers on Grafton Street, or shop for art on Merrion Square.

As mentioned the hotel has its own private gate into Iveagh Gardens. Right next door is the Museum of Literature. Across the road is Stephens Green Park, and next to that Stephens Green Shopping Centre and Grafton Street. Across the park is The Little Museum of Dublin. And around the corner you’ll find the National Concert Hall.

A handful of minutes on foot will bring you to the RHA Gallery of Contemporary Irish Art. There’s also the National Gallery of Art, and the the National Museums of Ireland, in archeology and natural history, the later known locally as the Dead Zoo. There are numerous restaurants and bars nearby, walk in the direction of Wexford Street. Or try the Creative Quarter around Powerscourt Townhouse. The Grand Canal is minutes away. And of course you’re not far from Dublin Castle, Trinity College, or a longer walk across O’Connell Bridge, along O’Connell Street to the Hugh Lane Gallery, or before that the shopping district around Henry Street.
