Barolo Wine from Piedmonte, Italy
This week’s Bevvy of the Week is a nod to red wine drinkers. Especially those of you who like your big full-on reds. If you find yourself picking up the same wine over and over again – the next time you are in an Off Licence why not go for a Barolo from the Piedmonte region in Italy.
Piedmont lies in the northwest of Italy, bordering Switzerland and France. Piedmonte, which means foot of the mountain, is true to its name. As it’s a land of full of mountains, at the foot of the Alps.
Barolo is made from 100% Nebbiolo – the grape variety used to produce the wine. And are usually high in alcohol – 13%.
Before the wines are released they are aged for three years. Two of which are in wood.
They have aromas of plum, and liquorice which follow through to the palate. They have high tannins, acidity and alcohol. And if you see reserva on the label it means the wine has been aged for an extra year in wood.
If you shop around you may find this wine starting from around €30 per bottle.
Sláinte, Cheer,
Patrick
