We all know the benefits of hydrated skin – it feels better, it looks better, and if you wear makeup, it’s a necessity. From season to season, and through all four, it’s important to not only have sunscreen on standby, but hydrating moisturisers – refreshing from the spring and summer sun, comforting from those autumn chills, and hydrating for blustery winter days when the air inside our homes can be dry from central heating.

I’ve tried my fair share of moisturisers over the years, and have featured a number here on The Life of Stuff, from well known chart toppers such as REN and Kiels to products that have since changed names, such as Organic Surge, now known as Organic Works.

Main Ingredients: Amongst others the main ingredients include Aqua and specially formulated Hyaluronic acid and botanical trehalose.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream: The new and improved Neutrogena Hydro Boost Range now comes with a new active ingredient – trelahose, a botanical sourced from the resurrection plant. This hardy plant can live without water for up to 50 years, and it’s the trelahose within the plant that helps it keep its moisture. And so along with it’s friend, Hyaluronic acid, that’s naturally produced by your body and found in your skin, Hydro Boost really offers you a chance to boost your skin’s hydration.

There are two moisturisers available the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream Moisturiser which suits dry skin, and the Hydro Boost Water Gel Moisturiser suitable for normal to combination skin.

I’m currently using the Gel Cream, because of the time of year it is – cold outside, central heating inside. I find it suitable for both day and night, under makeup, and as a boost before bed. It’s fragrance-free, oil-free, feels smooth and cool to touch, glides on, and its promise of creating a barrier with its special formula to help retain moisture is working for me. Supple, dewy glows will never go out of fashion!

Main Ingredients: Amongst others, Pure contains ‘UK-grown starflower and camelina oils’, Vitamin E-rich oat kernel oil, and Camelina sativa seed oil.

Pure Super Hydrate Day Cream: Marks and Spencers are proud of the fact that their Pure Moisturiser Range contains ‘responsibly sourced and expertly blended ingredients that are grown in Britain’.

The Pure Super Hydrate Day Cream has the added benefit of SPF 15, so a great choice when you’re on the go – like I am most mornings zipping about on my cargo bike on school runs. Although creamy to touch, this moisturiser is light on the skin and absorbs quickly without that greasy sheen. It works well on my skin that is combination, but can get dry during harsher weather days, if I don’t care for it. Although not fragrance-free, its smell is very subtle and fresh.

75ml Price: Ranging between €21 to €27.

Main Ingredients: Emollient oil with a combination of active ingredients from natural origins such as shea butter, beeswax, aloe vera and soy proteins.

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré: Some proclaim it has been a cult favourite since the 1950’s, others call it a miracle cream. The Embryolisse website states it has been a favourite amongst dermatologists for decades, and ‘lauded by beauty professionals and make-up artists of the stars’, and their ‘secret to beautiful skin’.

I find Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré light and smooth, with a subtle floral scent. It has helped nourish and hydrate my skin both in the morning and at night. It’s an ideal moisturiser for wearing as a moisturiser and priming base under makeup because of its silky texture that soaks into your skin quickly without that oily, sheen you can get from moisturisers. The 75ml goes a long way as long as you are mindful when applying. And on that note, Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré is also recommended as a makeup remover, face mask and aprés shaving – so it really is a multifunctional moisturiser.
