Must-Have Mascara – Four Favourites

Mascara – it can transform your face whether you’re going for that ‘au naturel’ look or something more ‘dramatique’. A sweep of the wand, and a light brush before the school run, or a mindful application before work. Whichever way you apply it, for me it’s a signal to my brain that I’m ready for the day ahead. Well, that and a strong coffee … and my eyebrow pencil, moisturiser, sunglasses … you get my drift – the little things.

YSL Mascara Volume Effect Cils the Curler, lash curling effect mascara is luxurious in appearance and price. But it lives up to the YSL quality and its ‘lash curling‘ promise. A quick sweep of the curved 2 in 1 brush, that curls and defines, and my eyelashes go from flop to pop. Beautifully black, this mascara even smells delicious. Probably because it’s ‘enriched with coconut oil, walnut leaf extract and jojoba oil.’ You could keep this beauty as a ‘going out’ mascara but life is too short.

My only issue was that it didn’t last long – and I mean in total. For everyday use it lasted all day, but my YSL Mascara Volume Effect Cils the Curler was dry within a couple of months of less than average use. I even went so far as to suspect I’d purchased a sample! But because we all need a little luxury in our lives, I’ll just have to buy it again to see what happens. For now though it has found a home on this Must-Have Mascara list.

Maybelline The Falsies Lash Lift

Maybelline The Falsies Lash Lift is the ‘fastest selling mascara of 2020‘, AND the No.1 new makeup product on the High Street. But is the promise of it being ‘better than a salon lash lift‘ true? I have to say this ‘washable mascara eye makeup‘ is definitely giving this statement a run for its money. And certainly deserves to be listed on this ‘Must-Have Mascara’ guide.

I love how light the Maybelline The Falsies Lash Lift wand feels, and the double curved lifting brush does exactly what it promises. It lifts and locks my lashes, separating them as it goes and holds them in place. A coƒƒuple of sweeps and I’m set for the day, a few extra if I’m getting set for the night. The colour is great and it’s easy to remove. And on that note the next step for me is to try the waterproof version because you know … Irish weather. I haven’t had my bottle very long so I don’t know how long it will last, but I’m hopeful it’ll see me through to next season.

Benefit They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara

Benefit They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara has been around for years, in fact it was released in Ireland in August 2011, so it has a big birthday coming up soon!

I reviewed it on The Life of Stuff back in 2013 as a Best Beauty Buy. And my thoughts on it hasn’t changed over time. It’s still easy to use, has a great colour and coverage and lasts all day – and so it lives up to its statement of ‘beyond mascara‘.

Feedback I’ve received is that it can be dry and flake, but I haven’t found this. My only peeve is when the mascara clumps around the lid but that’s rectified with a simple wipe. In the past Benefit They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara has lasted months for me, using it everyday, so although it’s pushing on luxury pricing it does put in the milage.

L’Oréal XFibre Xtreme Resist Waterproof Mascara

I’ve spotted L’Oréal XFibre Xtreme Resist Waterproof Mascara online for a number of different prices from €10 up to the Boots Ireland price of €17.99. I paid the €17.99 in June of this year, and although I love a good bargain, I’m not sorry I did. Because this is a great mascara. The packaging has also changed colour scheme since I purchased mine a few months ago so today you’ll find it in purple and aqua.

L’Oréal XFibre Xtreme Resist Waterproof Mascara is perfect for my school run days as I zip the boys about in our cargo bike. I’m up against all the elements including sun, wind and rain. And so I need a good waterproof mascara to keep in place. This mascara has a ‘double waterproof formula‘ and its false lash effect is achieved using its included primer, marked 1, and mascara, marked 2. There are also two ways to wear it.

1. Natural false lash look: Apply one coat of the primer, followed by one coat of the fibres.
2. Xtreme false lash look: Repeat application to build the mascara

This mascara is easy to apply, separates my lashes, lasts all day and my tube is still going strong with every day use. So when it comes to Must-Have Mascara, this is up there with the rest!
