What is CBD Oil?
There’s a lot of confusion about CBD (cannabidiol), its source and uses. And whilst cannabidiol is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is actually derived directly from the hemp plant, which you could call a close cousin of the marijuana plant. Hemp and marijuana plants look alike and even smell the same. But the main and most important difference is that hemp plants contain no more than 0.3% of the psychoactive substance THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Whereas marijuana can contain up to 25% THC. Basically – you can’t get high on hemp.
Dr. Hemp Me is an Irish owned, online CBD company that specialises in a variety of full-spectrum and broad spectrum CBD products. One of their most popular products is their CBD Oil – and the reason Dr. Hemp Me all began in 2018. And so without further ado, and to help us understand CBD Oil a little more is our ‘Q&A with Brian Cusack of Dr. Hemp Me’

What is CBD?
CBD is the short name for Cannabidiol and is the second most active cannabinoid of the cannabis plant. CBD comes straight from the hemp plant and therefore is known as non-psychoactive (does not produce a ‘high’. THC or tetrahydrocannabinol in comparison is a cannabinoid which comes from the cannabis plant and is ‘psychoactive’ or produces a ‘high’.
CBD products can contain trace amounts of THC but as these amounts are so small they are not capable of producing a so-called ‘high’. Other CBD oils contain absolutely no THC levels, as do many CBD edibles and topicals.
Our bodies have a system called the endocannabinoid system which is basically a system of cell receptors responsible for the regulation of many bodily functions. CBD helps to put this system back in balance if thrown out of balance by various health issues or outside stressors.
What is CBD Oil good for?
CBD Oil is now known to have many benefits for both humans and animals in terms of our health. It is fast becoming a widely used supplement to aid symptoms such as pain, inflammation, nausea, sleep disorders, seizures and skin disorders amongst others. Women in menopause have also made anecdotal claims regarding the regulation of their temperature and reduction in ‘hot flushes’ when taking CBD.
It is important to note and you will be happy to hear that CBD is not just for those with specific health issues. It can be used by absolutely anyone looking to improve their daily health and to reduce the inflammation levels in their body. CBD has natural anti-inflammatory properties which makes it beneficial for a wide variety of health problems.
How does CBD Oil make you feel?
Interestingly, even though CBD is used widely for help with sleep, when taken initially CBD Oil can have a mild caffeine-like effect on the body. When taken either in the morning or afternoon, CBD Oil can make the person ingesting it feel a little more awake and alert as it sets to work on their body. The phrase used at Dr. Hemp Me to describe this feeling would be ‘mental clarity’. Any brain fog you may experience in the mornings or the afternoon generally subsides from taking your CBD Oil.
How many drops of CBD Oil should I take?
The number of drops someone should take of CBD oil depends on a number of factors. Firstly, it depends on the brand of oil and therefore the strength or quality of the oil you are taking. Secondly, it depends on the reason you started taking CBD oil.
Usually good brands of CBD oil will provide a guided dosage on their product bottles or will advise you on request at the point of purchase. As a general rule of thumb, for any CBD Oil strength, you can start by taking 1-2 drops of CBD Oil every morning/ afternoon and increase this after a week or so if you feel the need. CBD dosage completely depends on each individual person because we all react to supplements differently and have different reasons for taking it. With time you will be able to gage what dosage is right for you and can stick to that.
For the beginning of your CBD journey in particular, it is very important to be consistent. Taking your CBD Oil or product every day is a must in order to build up CBD in your system. Then it can properly start taking effect. CBD Oil and its associated products can be taken and should be taken regularly and can also be taken when an acute symptom occurs such as a migraine or seizure. In this way the CBD can work quickly to curb such a symptom while also being present in your body already.
What other CBD products besides oil can I use?
There are so many CBD products available to CBD users nowadays. From edibles to topical products the list is becoming longer and longer. The most widely used product is CBD Oil, also known as CBD tinctures. The next most popular products include CBD capsules, CBD gummies or jellies, CBD topical creams, gels, balms and CBD coffee and tea.
A combination of CBD Oil and a topical cream or gel for example can work well to tackle inflammation from the inside out, and outside in for example. Combining different CBD products is fine and can be very helpful for some people with more acute health issues, however always seek advice before purchasing.
Are there any bad side effects of CBD?
CBD is a natural product so side effects are very limited. Some people who may take too much CBD at once time can be known to experience dizziness. However this is only in cases where correct dosages are not followed. CBD Oils can cause a bit of acid reflux if not allowed enough time to soak into the gums under the tongue and are partially swallowed instead. In terms of pets, if they have a very irritable or sensitive bowel CBD Oil can cause diarrhoea in some cases, so be mindful to take it slow starting your pet out on CBD Oil and monitor them along the way.
