Bevvy of the Week – Malbec

Malbec Red Wine

This week we are going to look at a grape variety call Malbec. The origin of this grape is a bit cloudy. Many people think it came from France, around the town of Burgundy, but nobody knows for sure.

It used to play a roll in the wines of Bordeaux where it is called Cot but was dropped in favor of the two Cabernet grape varieties Franc and Sauvignon, and the Merlot grape variety.

A savior was to come along in the shape of Argentina (or some might say it was the Malbec grape that saved Argentina’s wine industry) to bring this great grape back to the people. Argentina has taken this grape on as its own and they are now producing from the Malbec grape some of the worlds best wines.

The Malbec grape produces soft, medium to full bodied wines, with a ripe red fruit character and goes great with red meats and pasta. You can pick up a bottle for around €8 or you could go for a reserva for €10+

So if you have not tried a Malbec yet you are in for a treat.
